YAO YU

I am looking for a faculty position.

Welcome to visit my website! I am a Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellow at UCSD, working with David Sandwell and Sarah Gille. I received my Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in June 2023. Before that, I received my undergrade and master's degree in Geodesy at Wuhan University, China.

I enjoy discovering simple patterns in large datasets and validating them through analysis. My research focuses on small-scale ocean dynamics (e.g., eddies and internal tides), small-scale marine tectonics (e.g., abyssal hills), and ocean–seafloor interactions. Much of my work involves processing satellite altimetry data, including ocean surface heights from the SWOT mission, to extract signals. I am also exploring the use of machine learning for Earth sciences. I do a bit of theoretical modeling to complement observational work.

Upcoming Meetings and Presentations:

NASA MPOWIR Speaker Series, September 3, JPL, Pasadena
2025 SWOT Science Team Meeting , Oct 14-17, France

Past Presentation Recordings:

March 24, 2025, AGU Geodesy Section Webinar
November 21, 2024, SWOT Bathymetry Workshop
In the second half of this video, I explain how to download, read, and process SWOT data to generate marine gravity, and I walked through codes.
