Math book: A Guided Tour of Mathematical Methods for the Physical Sciences by Roel Snieder
I absolutely love this book. I learned all my math in Chinese, so my mind is wired to approach it in a certain way. This book offered intuitive insights and taught me how to express mathematical concepts and formulas in English.

Writing

I put a lot of effort into scientific writing. Every manuscript takes a lot of time and effort to polish. Here are a few rules I’ve learned along the way:
  • Follow the "big-small-big" structure: start with the broader context (big), point out the limitation, describe how you address it and what are your findings (small), and then return to the broader future directions and implications (big).
  • ChatGPT is great for fixing grammar and typos, but when it comes to logic and flow, better to do it yourself.
  • Connect sentences through logical flow, rather than relying on transition phrases like "in addition," "on the other hand," or "at the same time."
  • Strive for clarity and simplicity in every sentence.
  • Every sentence should serve a purpose.
  • The first sentence of each paragraph should either establish the context or summarize the main point of the paragraphy.
